Colin Beavan Visits Randolph College

Environmental activist Colin Beavan, author of No Impact Man, visited Randolph College on October 2, 2009.

Beavan became an unlikely celebrity when he set out to live an entire year leaving no carbon footprint. His book chronicled his experiences, including his wife and baby, living "off the grid" in New York City. A documentary movie of the Beavans' experience premiered September 11, 2009.

At Randolph, Beavan met with students and faculty from the Environmental Studies/Environmental Sciences Department, the Environmental Club and the Food and Justice Club. He also signed copies of his book, No Impact Man, and held a public talk to an engaged and curious crowed touching on personal and policy issues around the topic of living environmentally sustainable lifestyles.

The crowds, which included college and high school students, faculty, local activists and ordinary yet curious citizens were very engaged at all of the events, with Q&A sessions running long. Beavan invited the crowd to join the No Impact Project.

The event was the kickoff of a year dedicated to Sustainable Living at Randolph College. The College has long been at the forefront environmental issues and actively seeks to reduce carbon footprints at both the individual and institutional level, striving to thrive as a "green" college.
